Crazy Stupid Titles

Ever fallen in love with a movie that you would have seen YEARS earlier if the title had been less…misleading? That’s how I feel about “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

This 2011 gem written by Dan Fogelman and starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Julianne Moore delivers a smart, heartfelt exploration of love across different generations. It’s charming, hilarious, and nuanced in its take on relationships. But that title? It doesn’t begin to convey the film’s depth or appeal.

Dominic Morgan, aka Scriptfella reminds us that effective movie titles should accomplish two key things:

1. Tell the audience what the movie is about

2. Create intrigue or emotional resonance that makes people want to see it

“Crazy, Stupid, Love” gives us vague adjectives that tell us zilch. Nothing about this title suggests the film’s clever structure, its sharp dialogue or its thoughtful examination of marriage, divorce, and the search for connection.

Interestingly, according to my sources (not deeply verified, mind you), the screenwriter Dan Fogelman did not come up with the title. It was a result of a competition among cast and crew. The winner got an ipad.

Bottom line: I loved this movie and it deserved a better title!
